Re: A Swedish Song From 1903

Is anyone bothered by some of the idiosynchrasies of the music typeface (maybe it's just me)? The :n4 in the time signature being too low; :3r being slightly too low; :n looking a bit "crooked"; and especially the weird looking connection of the upstem flags with the note head ... I'm gene...

Re: Working during Covid-19 lockdown

I just watched your video, Octo. Because you mentioned that you were a coffee addict, I thought it was interesting that Youtube recommended an episode of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee", the interview/comedy series by American comedian Jerry Seinfeld (specifically the episode with Barac...

Oh, that's brilliant, benwiggy; thanks for sharing ...
Same problem here with the login (latest Firefox, Windows 10): Notatio doesn't remember me, I have to log in after closing Firefox. I haven't changed my settings; and Notatio is the only website that behaves that way.

Re: Metrico: Font for metric equations

@ Giangi: MS Word's use of ligatures, alternate sets etc. is somewhat limited (and occasionally unpredictable). You might want to try Libre Office whose support of advanced typographic features is more advanced (which is remarkable given the fact that the program is free). Maybe the font works bette...

Re: Octave transposing clef design?

... Unfortunately, I can't find it now in the English version, but I remember reading it a while ago. ... The quote is on page 32 in the English edition: “Do not use these clefs to replace genuine octave transpositions (Britten used them in his late scores, especially for piano and harp). The clefs...

Re: Going digital

Just a thought: Might it be an option to dinstinguish different kinds of licence, the way that type designers offer a different licence depending, for example, on the number of working stations a font will be installed on, or the kind of job the font will be used for (private vs. commercial)? So the...

Re: Community creates a textual font

Luc de Groot (one the best type designers around) has a whole theory of how interpolation works: https://www.lucasfonts.com/learn/interpolation-theory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I75Efo7whrs The following page has a nice visual aid to demonstrate how the outlines of a particular font change depe...

Re: "Warmth" and Note Size

The problem is that the Peters font isn't really a 'font' that can be identified. In the second half of the 19th century (the time music engraving was molded into the shape that we recognize today as 'modern'), every type foundry had their own (but almost identical) version of a 'normal' typeface fo...

Re: Internal evidence and editorial problems: Beethoven

John, I didn't mean to suggest that "period convention" trumps the individual genius of Beethoven. However, his unique way of composing (and notating) music can still be interpreted only within the context of his time. And with regard to the "missing" staccato dot on the first no...
