Re: Tied chords

I agree about preferring that ties point to the noteheads as much as practicable.

I believe Dorico has a command to simply exchange the positions of selected notes on the same beat, left/right. That would apply in this organ excerpt with the E unison on the downbeat.

Re: The last bar

The default space allocations in all of our music software are not in fact in linear proportion to the durations. They are easy to change, per document. I often prefer even less space for :5 and :6 than the defaults, but of course this applies only where there aren’t shorter durations occurring simu...

Re: Interesting notation in Aida Act III

In this excerpt, only the first tremolo of the 3rd flute is correctly notated by modern standards. But I have to admit the 2nd violins' notation is one I've never seen before. I tried to recopy this in Sibelius and found I couldn’t get the beams the way Verdi wrote them with any setting. Then I rea...

Re: 3 beaming choices

Tempo is a big, essential factor in beaming style, often overlooked by modern editors. At this tempo, it is easy to count and feel every 16th note. At a fast tempo one feels the beats and places 16th notes within each beat; thus the usefulness of beaming to the beat. (I regret missing the composer’s...

Re: Fat Eighths!

Also off-topic but important:
The first note of m. 5 in RH (where you corrected the :piano alignment) should be E‍♭, not D.

Re: Free irregular tremolo

I suppose you could indicate it roughly with something like feathered beams. Unless it should be completely unspecified.

I like the changes, OCTO! I noticed right away. I wish other PHPBB admins would be nearly so attentive to the UX. Thanks!

Re: Typsetting a large MS of mine from 1994/5?

Impressive work, both David and Fred! I just want to add that the entry method recommended by tisimst is also the way to go with Dorico, when they get the feature working that automatically combines multiple staves.

Re: Please enlighten me on the meaning of...

How in the world does that appear in the parts, I wonder? Perhaps the other instrument must be cued in each.

Re: Two-part problem

I would want to keep them on separate staves. If you must combine, you could write the first note of the lower part as two tied :5 … that would at least give you stems. Tying the upper part doesn’t help anything.
