Re: Henle Blog and App

A couple of things stood out from their response: Even if we use computers nowadays… If? ;) …our three engravers… I don't know how it works in the industry, but I assumed they used an army* of freelance engravers. Is this not the case and all their work is done by 3 people, or is it the case where t...

Re: Beautifying Mallet Percussion

If it is educational music and/or this was written by a virtuoso mallet player, I think that it is appropriate for the hand divisions to be specified in the notation itself, just as keyboard composers generally specify such decisions. In music written by an composer who is an expert on the instrume...

Re: Beautifying Mallet Percussion

Please excuse me if I sound to harsh, it is definitely not my intention. ;) Oh no, not at all! The more I learn about and learn to see, the more frustrated I get with engraving in percussion literature. I think it may be that it doesn't have a long history of literature and thus hasn't be in the ha...

Re: Software recognition, by eye

@tisimst "…a score using the Opus font but made with Finale," is how I should've said it, as in, seeing a score that implements the Finale rules but is using the font from Sibelius. I was trying to explain that seeing a particular font immediately puts my brain into a mode of expecting to ...

Re: Software recognition, by eye

I find myself nodding along to what everyone has mentioned so far; smiling with a few of them. For me, the font is too much of a dead giveaway not to influence everything else I see from there. I don't know that I've seen a score in Opus but that was done in Finale. Not to veer the topic too far awa...

Re: Beautifying Mallet Percussion

OT—LP usually handles optical spacing well, but that second example of mine is not doing too well in that category…

Re: Beautifying Mallet Percussion

Where are those examples from? Not only is there, in most cases, no reason to distinguish between left and right hand use by stem direction, it actually can turn out to be a hindrance quickly. Any percussionist will tell you that choice over which hands to use should ultimately be left to the perfo...

Beautifying Mallet Percussion

Marimba follows a lot of the same conventions as piano, namely RH stems up, LH stems down. However, this leads to the following results to maintain that convention: marimba_1.JPG marimba_2.JPG I've been trying to think of a way to phrase a question that gets my point across, but I feel like I'd be s...

@Dat

I haven't purchased them yet. I just spent some time in the library looking through them. I'll definitely let you know when I get my own.

I'm looking at them now. I definitely want to get my own copies! They're really well done. Also, there are some INTENSE slurs in a few of these!
