Re: Working during Covid-19 lockdown

What an interesting topic. In fact, I hoped to find time to compose and/or arrange some tunes for the two jazz big bands I am leading, but I find myself in a comparable situation. On the one hand, teaching online (trombone, piano, music theory) via Facetime/Zoom/Skype from my home requires more prep...

Re: Has anyone read the following books? (Boustead, Mender, Chlapik)

I bought the Chlapik book when starting out engraving (some 20 years ago) and German is my native language, so I dare to say I understand what he writes. The title Die Praxis des Notengraphikers already narrows down its contents to a description of a music typesetter's practice . Although he differe...

Re: Vocal score yet again.

In writing out a piano accompainment part you take over the work which is otherwise required from pianists themselves. That perfectly allright, but there are quite some piano reductions which aren't very much reductions, but instead give the original pitches even if it's unplayable on a piano. Then ...

Re: A very dotted note (Notational curiosity vol2.)

The page Extremes of Conventional Music Notation says: 3. Most augmentation dots {B&I 4.6, 6.7} Quadruple dots appear in Liszt: Piano Concerto #2 (1839, rev. 1848; Kalmus ed.), Allegro deciso, mm. 327 and 331; Schumann: String Quartet no. 1, Op. 41 no. 1 (1842), III, mm. 16, 17, 33, 34, etc. (co...

Re: Accidentals alignment

The different widths of staff lines vs. ledger lines in the Lilipond examples do bother me a lot more than everything else, I have to admit.

The GUIDO Note Server from University of Darmstadt was and is online since 2001 and is capable of notating music in a web browser.

Re: Finale update

It would be easier to decide if you knew for certain that everyone would upgrade at the same time. Actually, I'm always happy not to upgrade at the same time as the majority of users. The german version usually appears some months after the inital english release, and thus we used to get the "...

Re: tied quavers everywhere!

Just for the record, here's a source: Henry Mancini recommended this practice in his book "Sounds and Scores" from 1973 where he describes his arranging and orchestration techniques for Hollywood orchestras in the 60s/70s:

Re: [puzzle] Two voices in one staff

There is no a direct solution to "cut" the slur in Finale, but there are workarounds. 1. Enter with two slurs, measure attached, than fine tune them to look like they are a single one, but cut. 2. Enter a normal slur with preparation to be "cut". Than when finished, save it as P...

Re: "On cue"

I agree, but I'm trying to avoid using multiple mixed languages in the score. So my choices are Italian (all of the tempos and tempo changes), or French (the title pages, movement list, instrument names). I suppose French would work okay. Translated literally, it would be "sul segno". If ...
