Re: Very Short Octave Sign Rant

75 / 25 % looks about right to me.

I'm definitely not a fan of those solid hooks. They look awkward at best. (Why don't we start using differently dashed or dotted staff lines, too? With a bold solid middle line. That should improve orientation...)

Re: Very Short Octave Sign Rant

Florian, the Dorico is excellent and has a nice vertical, but what does the default look like? Unfortunately I can’t show you because that would mean to reset ALL my engraving options to the default — unless I want to do some surgery on the user data xmls for which I don’t have time. But I think it...

Re: Very Short Octave Sign Rant

You can get pretty close by changing three engraving options and saving them as default in Dorico:

Unfortunately, it’s still impossible to get the vertical position of the line right. Oh well...

For what it’s worth, I hardly ever used Finale’s built-in octave lines. I had my own.

Re: Staccatos on invisible noteheads

A matter of taste? I would center the dots above the stems.

Re: New font for figured bass: Figurato

A quick update: The normal version of Figurato should work fine with Dorico 3. There’s no need to use FiguratoMac any longer if you’ve upgraded.

Re: Dorico/Lilypond/SCORE?

canonperpetuus, if I were you I would choose Lilypond over all others. For music from the early 19th century? I disagree. Get Dorico, get a MIDI keyboard and you’ll be producing (reasonably) high quality material in what feels like no time at all, once you have learned the ropes. I have never used ...

Re: Internal evidence and editorial problems: Beethoven

John, these are all fascinating threads. Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts here. I look forward to studying and playing from your Beethoven edition once it is available.

By the way, have you finished the Chopin etudes?

Re: Key signature and staff size

Engravers strike a compromise so the key signatures do not differ too much in total width, as in the first example, but the accidentals themselves are not too widely spaced as in the second. Anyone know how to do this in Finale? And does Dorico do this by default? I don’t think it’s possible in Fin...

Re: Beethoven Stems 3

What is the notational purpose of the double-stemmed first sixteenth note of the left-hand groupings? I understand the meaning later when that note should be held throughout, but I don't quite understand why he would double-stem with equal durations. He really thinks of two voices, not just one not...
