Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

Trying to many fonts is like working at a perfume store. After some time you can't truly feel any perfume and distinguish it clearly. But I sometimes just wonder how do the professionals are working? They must surely work longer than a few minutes The professional engravers do not change fonts freq...

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

Here is an example of a 4-parts vocal score. Each score uses only one typeface either normal or condensed. Lyrics and staff labels have a condensed width to allow at least three bars per staff. A normal width would allow only two bars per staff. The Garamond score looks quite good to me and if I was...

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

@odod Oh, Amazing, what a great font! It looks like Optima or Zapf Humanist. Now my score has the chance to be engraved by an engraver who really knows his stuff! :-) I need more time to have a deeper look and to answer but in case you need the lyrics, here they are: Sieh, endlich es ist Zeit, erhe...

Trying to many fonts is like working at a perfume store. After some time you can't truly feel any perfume and distinguish it clearly. Now with this I completely agree with you :-) But I sometimes just wonder how do the professionals are working? They must surely work longer than a few minutes :grin...

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

Examples are indeed interesting. But of course it also depends on what one is trying to prove with an example. On my side I try to search and find out what is possibly working. Here are some examples of the same score each using different fonts. (Edit: for some unknown reasons after uploading the pi...

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

@Odod so i think, you do not need to worry about the font, engraving is an art, that is why sometimes artists don't follow the rules, the real artists were those who "invented their own stylistic art into a working ground rule every time they started a new one, and sometimes new things came after on...

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

Just an imaginative speculation is closer to philosophy than in notation. What is missing from the discussion are specifics. My first post was indeed rather general. But the answers I got leaded fast to a basic debate, leading then to some theoretical answers from my side. This is definitely not wh...

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

@odod I find the Threnody score really good looking, thank you for sharing. Probably the composition in itself leads this score to look more modern than others. To all who answered my questions: I think it's time for me to draw some conclusions. From the answers in this thread it seems that some qui...

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

Braces and clefs are neutral, unchanging elements that should not call attention to themselves as they do in the example. Like most fonts that imitate handwriting, I think that the LSalgueiro example is too active and informal to produce a well-balanced page of engraved polyphonic music that looks ...

Re: A modern looking score in 2018?

@ John Ruggero Well I am not trying to find a revolutionary new notation system :) I am interested in a approach to notation which would be a little less "baroque". You are of course aware that musicians playing jazz like the look of the Real Book. Even the quite traditional oriented Dorico team int...
