Re: has anyone ever heard of "Daniels Instrumentation Standard"?
David Daniels was an author of a well-known resource for orchestra librarians titled Orchestra Music. It has gone through many editions over the years and now has an online companion. It lists not only instrumentation, but publisher information and timings, among other things. There is also a helpfu...

Re: has anyone ever heard of "Daniels Instrumentation Standard"?
Actually, my example would indicate E-flat Clarinet, not Bass (= means [meant?] tertiary instrument) and no doubling for the 2 Bassoons at all. It seems that Daniels has changed the format (Daniels himself passed away a few years ago) since I retired in 2018. Perhaps the librarian could get you acce...

Re: has anyone ever heard of "Daniels Instrumentation Standard"?
Yes, I (and most librarians in the US) am familiar with this. No symbol separates the ww from the brass - only a space. So, *3*3=32 4331 means: 3 Flutes (one doubling Piccolo) 3 Oboes (one doubling EH) 3 Clarinets (one doubling E-flat Cl) 2 Bassoons 4 Horns 3 Trumpets 3 Trombones 1 Tuba The major sh...

Re: The Stravigor?
I owned one of these in the 70's. I might still have it - buried somewhere.
It was fine for sketching but you couldn't use it on onion skins because the ink wasn't dark enough. Even on paper, the staff lines were rather thick and uneven.

Re: Stem Direction question
I just finished a large project in Dorico that required this.
Three separate percussion parts and a percussion score combining all the instruments, all in the same file.

Re: Stem Direction question
Please, librarians have enough to do. Don't make them extract custom parts as well. I often make individual percsussion parts as well as a percussion score so the principal has the flexibility to reassign parts or use a different number of players than specified. The tricky part is arranging for goo...

Re: Placement of the staccato on headless notes
The first example looks better to me, but you should adjust the staccato dots so that they are parallell to the gliss. line.

Re: tremolo notes and ties
From the G. Schirmer Manual of Style and Usage (Second edition):
"We do not use dashed ties for tremolandi, trills or artificial harmonics".
