Oh, experimenting with condensed score is a good idea! I sort of absentmindedly copied the layout of the 1848 original (hence the unusual stave order), but there's no reason that's really necessary. TBH, I don't think you would necessarily lose anything of your argument if you just printed the two variants as text, like additional verses of hymns. If you can't put the labels in the "Fig. 1" text, then they do cramp things somewhat. This is actually what I initially had done! But then...
