Re: An age old engraving problem
Agreed. This is an ugly issue with a number of solutions, but nice-looking erasure of the background feels so good to me. This isn’t available in any software I’m aware of at the moment, but it is possible with some custom functionality in LilyPond. I’ve used it myself.

Re: MTF Fonts noteheads displaying as symbols (Finale 27)
Abraham Lee doesn't sell his fonts anymore, and only made SMuFL versions of Cadence and Scorlatti, I think. The first part is true, but I did end up making Arnold, Beethoven, Cadence, Haydn, and Scorlatti all SMuFL compliant and publicly available for a time. I had intended to do many others, but l...

Re: Trouble with ties
Whenever I see long ties like this in piano music, I wonder if a simple Ped marking would make more sense because of how it gets played in the end (depending on tempo, etc.). Often this is true, but I realize the finger holds/crossing is probably done on purpose here. Your solution looks just fine, ...

Re: "only" forte?
As a choral conductor myself, I take it upon myself to understand the score well enough to know that there's a section coming up that needs to grow to fortissimo. Certainly the suggestion wouldn't hurt, but it's really going to be up to the conductor's ear to decide when they've reached forte and wh...

Re: Fermata
I’m interested to hear others’ thoughts as well. I’ve seen this numerous times and I could never make sense why a fermata would be placed this way. I would place it like the upper staff does.

Re: Fonts for Lyrics
David's example page is interesting because it reveals another related problem, which makes all the difference of whether or not a lyric extension line is necessary on, for example, "rain" (m. 60). The entire page feels a bit busy, but not because of its density. It feels extra busy becaus...

Re: Hyphens for compound words
A hyphenated word isn’t treated any different than hyphenated syllables. So, it would be storm - clouds on separate notes with the hyphen between.

Re: Tie collisions
Off topic, I find it curious how each application has determined an inconsistent number of augmentation dots to use for each chord cluster... sometimes 4, 5, 6, etc. Which is correct in each case? I think that's a question for another post.

Re: Tie collisions
Does Dorico have an option to position the tie ends on the other side of the augmentation dots like this: Yes, Dorico has a TON of settings for ties. The one that makes the most impact is the "Length of ties in chords" setting. This gives two options: Uniform or Allowed To vary (Default)....
