Re: Dorico 5.1.60 update!
I have an 88 key keyboard at home, so it's not an issue there, it was just the incongruity of being able to enter what I see for every instrument, unless it was an octave transposing instrument, and then I needed to transpose. Entering at transposed pitch should be transposed pitch for all.

Re: Some possible improvements for a piano sheet (original composition)
A few stream of consciousness comments ... There are several standard conventions regarding fonts that you aren't adhering to. Tempo indications are typically a bold Roman font. Dynamic text indications like cresc., dim., etc. are usually an italic Roman font. The systemic bar numbers are usually an...

Re: Notations 21
I finally found a copy of this with some minor cover damage for a non-ridiculous price. It is a very cool book! Neither are in collectable condition, but I now have the Notations / Notations 21 set!

Re: Dorico 5.1.60 update!
Yeah, the octave thing had been one of my gripes for years. It always seemed completely inconsistent that I could enter an instrument that transposes at a 9th at written pitch, but not one that transposes at an 8th. Really happy to see this option! I already have a 3:2 tuplet shortcut hacked in, so ...

Diderot - Encyclopédie
So I found a rare book dealer that was selling some original folios from Diderot's famous "Encyclopédie," published between 1751 and 1772. He happened to have the folios on music engraving so I bought them. DiderotSmall-1.jpg DiderotSmall-2.jpg DiderotSmall-3.jpg DiderotSmall-4.jpg Diderot...

Re: rest amalgamation compound time, quarter note beats
No half rests in 3/4. Same in 6/4 or 9/4 etc.; only dotted half rests. The no half rests in 3/4 is certainly a hard-and-fast rule except for the fermata exception you mentioned, but not so for multiples of 3/4 as a long string of quarter rests can be disorienting and obscure the meter. It's ok to c...

Re: Inquiry on the origin of ties
A bit off topic for your actual query, but the title of the thread got me wondering when ties were first used. For anyone curious, Rastall's book says the following:

Re: Inquiry on the origin of ties
Are any manuscripts by that composer available? I'd be curious if that practice is reflected in the manuscripts as well, or if it is a "house style" of the publisher/engraver. Do other publications from the publisher around the same time period use that practice?

Re: The End of FINALE
Don't you think that Sibelius might have the same end like Finale in the next 10 years or so? A few years ago I would have said yes. Avid seems to have some renewed interest in it though, and it is being actively being developed again, so I don't really know. MuseScore is crushing the educational m...

Re: Best design for X noteheads? [contemporary music notation]
I haven't thought about this in a while, but here's what I've been defaulting to in Dorico:
