Re: tied quavers everywhere!

David, your solution to tie something over would certainly be the best one and works particularly well in this case, since the "orchestral hell" would cover the release. Seconded! Knut, as usual I don't think we are far apart. If precision is required, then by all means notate it. But if ...

Re: tied quavers everywhere!

But the normal tapering of notes is something musicians do as a matter of course. Trying to notate it in some exact way is absurd. Given the solid precedence for this notation, at least in the works by many of those considered the masters of the French-Russian school of orchestration, I think it's ...

Re: tied quavers everywhere!

I can't really speak to this in the specific context of vocal music, but from a general instrumental point of view, I disagree that this is a needless notation perpetuated by certain control-freak composers. It seems very logical to me that ending a note between beats is much less conspicuous than e...

Re: tied quavers everywhere!

I remember discussing it on the Finale forum in the past, but I'm unable to track down the thread. We've discussed it before and you (!) recommended Berthold City Light Italic as the closest match. It's not perfect, but I've not been able to find anything closer since. Novello used the same font fo...

Re: tied quavers everywhere!

Here's some not particularly attractive examples: Ben, who's the publisher of the first example? Is it Ricordi? That dynamics font is pretty extraordinary. I remember discussing it on the Finale forum in the past, but I'm unable to track down the thread. Nor am I able to find a Recordi edition (if ...

Re: tied quavers everywhere!

So does it mean "make sure you hold the note full length", or does it mean "go beyond the beat"? (and if the latter, to what purpose?) Many conductors tell choirs to ignore them; the alternative is often a precious over-emphasis -- particularly if it has a consonant. It can mean...

Re: tied quavers everywhere!

Guessing, no more, it may have been compositional in order to prevent stopping exactly at the beat, especially if the phrase ended with a consonant. That is certainly part of it, but the notation isn't limited to choral music or a certain period. Even I was taught to use the notation, and it's wide...

Re: [WORKBENCH] Brahms Op. 119, No. 1

I don't know about the software, but I agree that this is really third rate work, both in terms of typography and engraving. I've seen enough similarly bad examples to know that there is no reason (anymore) to expect high quality engraving from Urtext editions. I'm particularly struck by the unbalan...

Re: [WORKBENCH] Brahms Op. 119, No. 1

The Dorico source material must be very good! :) Tongue in cheek, perhaps, but I'm not sure what you mean. The source material I was referring to was the manuscript or whatever source an engraver would use. I'd imagine that it isn't customary for any professional engraver to start a project without...
