Re: Dorico Pro 2 released
I still feel like the "Sibelius"-style slurs and ties curve too much near the ends. LP has the same issue by default, albeit a bit less pronounced.

Dorico Pro 2 released

Thoughts?
Still lacks a few of the features I'd want from LP, and seems to still have trouble with the kind of deep customizability that Finale and LP allow, but I don't have first-hand experience with it.

Re: HB Music Engraver
I've seen this used on ancient computer scores from the 90s. I think most users had to write in the lyrics by hand with it.
Definitely not a fan of the output.

Re: "Library" vs "Performance" editions
Isn't this included in the Henle app to some extent, where you can select different bowings and fingerings on the fly to be overlaid on a base Urtext score?

Re: When should interpretation should become?
I have always understood the notes of a slurred group in instrumental music to be both connected to each other and also shown to be separate in some way from the surrounding notes. This is the only way in which the grouping can be shown. The degree and means of separation depends totally on the sit...

Re: "Instructional" editions
This is why I like the Schenker edition of the Beethoven sonatas so much - it's as close as one can get the composer's intentions and it still manages to be helpful in almost every way without being intrusive.

Re: When should interpretation should become?
We've had discussions about "unmarked" articulation being shorter in the past here - but that was always in the context of a pre-Romantic piece, generally. Depending on the overall style of your piece, it could be entirely appropriate as an implication or it might need additional clarifica...

"Instructional" editions
Is there still a place for these in today's Urtext world? I own the Henle Bach WTC but frequently refer back to Bruno Mugellini's edition for suggestions on fingering, phrasing, and interpretation. The same with Schnabel's Beethoven, even though I own the Schenker. With all the strides we've made in...

Re: Indicating voice types?
I think they're helpful - but I don't think any singer would take on one of these roles (or get hired for them) without someone carefully examining the music itself to see if it's suitable for them.
Either way, you may as well leave them in. More information never hurt anyone.

John, is the Ratz revision of Schenker's edition superior or inferior to the original?
