Re: pizz in French scores

Yes, now that you mention it, for years I have felt more comfortable with the British way of writing St for Street, Mr for Mister, etc, with no periods. (And yet I’m not in the habit of writing “etc.” without one! Had to change it to be self-consistent.)

Re: pizz in French scores

Very interesting. Since “pizz” in a string part couldn’t mean anything but pizzicato (pizza? not likely) it’s just as obvious with no period. Also “arco” is not abbreviated, so that makes more of a “parallel construction”. I guess they were saving space, and a bit of work.

Re: "Simple" entry in Winscore

Cute program. And timely post! I just sang this hymn this morning in church.

Having to copy a page of music from the bottom up is downright perverse.

Re: Staff Rastral sizes in Digital Engraving apps

Octo, respectfully, I think you are working too hard on something that has already been worked out in great detail by many printer manufacturers. My HP printer from 1998, for example, is nominally 600dpi but uses incremental dot filling to get smoother lines such as are needed for hairpins. I really...

Re: Plate numbers

I think it’s a matter of preference for each company. Since I am a one-man operation, I have been putting a date stamp on the bottom of score pages since I began with Finale in 1988. This helps me know, when someone has marked up changes, which version of a file they worked from.

Re: Text Typeface like "Ped"?

In several decades I have not seen any type that matches the letterforms in the :ped symbol. It was custom lettering that has become a traditional form.

Re: Font feedback

I am just loving these Libretto designs, Knut! This is precisely the kind of type I’ve been wanting for scores for many years, and I am very eager to use it when it’s ready. I should reread this entire thread and add some comments when I can concentrate, but I wanted to post this praise right away n...

Re: Note spacing - voice collision in Dorico et al.?

Brilliantly illustrated, John! I was going to suggest the same idea, before your first example yesterday. But I didn’t feel confident that anyone would agree if I didn’t have the time to illustrate it properly. Good to know this was indeed an engraver’s trick for optical alignment.

Re: Beaming conventions

I can see this Liszt case both ways. Obviously the composer’s gesture is sort of marred by the breaks in Peters. The question to me is: Should the two hands be really synchronized? The very wide distance between the notes on the two staves makes extra work to see which 16th lines up with which 8th. ...

Re: Note spacing - voice collision in Dorico?

There are two things about spacing going on here: allocation and justification. Dorico’s allocation is far superior to Finale’s. There is no good reason for the first & second 16ths to be closer together than the others; Finale fails to allocate enough space for the second between the voices. My...
