Re: Case of the Disappearing Slur

You describe an unfortunate situation regarding Dorico, Knut, and one that I have feared. Finale has enough limitations, one doesn't need more. Thanks, Schonbergian, it is always nice to get the Lilypond perspective. Its interesting that Lilypond also shortens the slurs in this situation. I find you...

Re: Case of the Disappearing Slur

Knut, I like the greater consistency produced by your 45 degree rule, the rule about the ledger lines—all of which I will incorporate. I also see that you are keeping the lower slur tip centered over the note head. Were the note heads even closer than in your example, I would tend to move the lower ...

Re: Case of the Disappearing Slur

Thanks, tisimst. Looks like Dorico stayed with the Finale strategy; the result is very much the same, aside from the difference in slur thickness and proportion.

Re: Case of the Disappearing Slur

And even if not, it is often enough to nudge just one end of the slur, straight up or down - which is easy with the arrow keys - one staff space (or more), without needing to adjust the curvature in any other way. That is a style of adjustment that I avoid in most situations since it uncenters the ...

Re: Case of the Disappearing Slur

Thanks, Schonbergian David and Ere. I am glad that I am in good company in preferring the full length slurs. Ere, your suggestions were the ones I was looking for. I had my Maximum slur angle set to 40 degrees (why, I don't remember); the Finale default is 45. Set to 90 degrees, the slurs don't shri...

Case of the Disappearing Slur

Finale contracts the slurs over widely intervals as the notes get closer together, perhaps so that the tips of the slurs can remain centered over the note heads. While this style can be observed in well-engraved music past and present, the alternative, normal length slurs that are not centered over ...

Composers vs Engravers: Stems and Slurs part 8

The beginning phrases of the middle part of the Chopin Etude op. 10 no. 3 can be difficult to understand and perform. Does the main melody of this phrase, which is repeated four times, really end with those 4 sixteenths decorating an F# as it appears in the Mikuli edition: Chopin Stems Mikuli.jpg Th...

Composers vs Engravers: Stems and Slurs part 7

An interesting case of unusual stem direction occurs in the autograph of the middle section of Chopin's Etude op 10 no. 3. Chopin makes two of the beamed pairs stand out from the others by suddenly changing stem direction in both hands and adding a staccato wedge over the second note. I have starred...

Re: Composer vs Engravers: Cautionary Accidentals

Hi, odod. Sorry, I didn't understand your comment. Do you mean that the tip of one of the slurs is kissing a staff line? If so, I think you are right that it is nicer if a slur passes through a staff line at least a little. But I do see slur tips just touching staff lines in several good editions I ...

Re: Composer vs Engravers: Cautionary Accidentals

Here is an example of the kind of cautionary accidental that is purely the result of an editor following a dogmatic rule rather than using musical instinct. It makes things less rather than more clear. Would anyone have any doubt that it is an A natural in the LH at the beginning of the second measu...
