Re: Composer vs Engravers: Cautionary Accidentals

I agree thoroughly about the cautionary accidentals. I can’t imagine the possibility of an algorithm that would handle that much subtle musical thought. So I suppose I would turn the feature off for such music, especially since I would be editing as carefully as possible anyway. Thanks for the examp...

Re: Composers vs Engravers: Stems and Slurs part 4

I’m surprised so many editors did not just put them all stem-down. The inconsistency across the piece (which you very nicely illustrated) makes those few early up-stems seem not deliberately meaningful, compared with other non-standard stem directions we’ve been observing. How will you do them? Does...

Re: Fonts for Lyrics

To my eye all of the lyrics in both of the latest samples are much smaller than necessary. With the notes spaced so very wide, the lyrics could be at least 25% larger, and then they’d be more comparable to the size of the notes for legibility. Don’t forget that singers often must focus on the words ...

Re: "Broadway Style": always 4 measures per staff?

I’m not currently doing any work in this area but the last time I did (10 years ago) the 4-bars-per-line rule was indeed being relaxed, at least by some. I would think with today’s technology it’s rarely necessary to pencil in changes any more.

Re: Vocal scores and staff sizes

"Cadenza" size (4.7mm or 13.3pt) was used for reduced staff sizes in traditional Violin+Piano scores. I don't see why this wouldn't apply to Vocal+Piano Reduction scores. Now that I reread this for content instead of getting stuck on a detail, I should mention that all of the piano/vocal ...

That’s so close to Elaine Gould’s figures for Rastral 7 (4.8 mm, 13.6 pt). Could they be one and the same?

Re: Music Type Foundry - new fonts!

Congratulations, sir!! What a gigantic compilation of fine, fine work. This ability to precisely mimic the punches of major engraving houses is something a friend & I have fantasized about since Finale first came out in 1988.

Re: Endings?

I agree, and I would put “For ending” first and “For continuing” after, with a gap between (very effective in Sibelius).

Re: Divisi double stops - Brahms

Yes, I’ve seen this kind of alignment elsewhere too. Note the brackets indicating double-stops (vertical slur-shapes in the Complete Works edition). I checked the part at IMSLP and it’s the same as the score, no extra staff needed:
