Re: Dorico/Lilypond/SCORE?
canonperpetuus, if I were you I would choose Lilypond over all others. For music from the early 19th century? I disagree. Get Dorico, get a MIDI keyboard and you’ll be producing (reasonably) high quality material in what feels like no time at all, once you have learned the ropes. I have never used ...

Re: Internal evidence and editorial problems: Beethoven
John, these are all fascinating threads. Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts here. I look forward to studying and playing from your Beethoven edition once it is available.
By the way, have you finished the Chopin etudes?

Re: Key signature and staff size
Engravers strike a compromise so the key signatures do not differ too much in total width, as in the first example, but the accidentals themselves are not too widely spaced as in the second. Anyone know how to do this in Finale? And does Dorico do this by default? I don’t think it’s possible in Fin...

Re: Beethoven Stems 3
What is the notational purpose of the double-stemmed first sixteenth note of the left-hand groupings? I understand the meaning later when that note should be held throughout, but I don't quite understand why he would double-stem with equal durations. He really thinks of two voices, not just one not...

Re: Beethoven Stems
Well, it's not really about what I would prefer. I just assumed that expressions and bar numbers were both set in 12 pt and that made me think the fonts had wildly different vertical metrics. But if you ask me, yes, I would make the bar numbers smaller (especially here, because they're hardly needed...

Ah, ok.
The bar numbers look larger than the expressions to me.

Re: Beethoven Stems
Thus the cresc.'s are by Beethoven and not editorial. I use Wess's beautiful italic font at 12 pt for expressions. It is exactly the same size as 12 pt Times New Roman. Florian, perhaps it appears small because the relative emptiness of the page? Or you prefer a larger size for expressions? Two dif...

Re: Beethoven Stems
Thanks, John. In my experience we always have to make a judgement call in such cases: Does the (by modern standards) unconventional notation convey a clear additional information, or is it more distracting than useful when seen in print? Here’s an example where the original stemming supports the dir...

Re: Beethoven Stems
John, would you be willing to post a picture of your engraving of this passage? I’d be interested to see what it looks like in print.

Re: pre-Reviewing Dorico
I'm afraid I don't have the time now to give a precise answer to each of your questions. Here's a rather general comment. While a few of these things are certainly possible, and some (single trill notes, stacked grace notes, independent meters, big time signatures, powerful tuplets) are even impleme...
