Re: Classical concerto for double bass in MuseScore

I can't seem to view the parts without a MuseScore subscription. Could you possibly upload the part in question here or on a free hosting service?

Re: New to engraving...am I on the right track?

noth - ing is another dictionary hyphenation that makes no sense from either a linguistic or phonetic perspective. David, I think we could say the same about many kinds of "unfamiliar" notation talked about here that nonetheless parallel the musical ideas much more closely than textbook no...

Re: Classical concerto for double bass in MuseScore

TNR has way too much contrast and is often unreadable at the smaller sizes that sheet music often requires. In addition, it does not harmonize at all with the style of your page.

Re: New Harp Pedal Font

While this is welcomed and looks very nice, I have to wonder if this fills a void that should really be served by notation programs themselves.

Are there seriously no easily-accessible harp pedaling tools in the standard notation programs?

Re: Classical concerto for double bass in MuseScore

Some very nice work for a beginner. Some thoughts: I would suggest you steer well clear of TNR for music engraving. Try New Century Schoolbook for a drop-in replacement that harmonizes much better with the style of your pages. I would make the overall line weight heavier if this is going to be print...

Re: Composers vs Engravers: Stems and Slurs part 10

John, I'm curious about your thoughts on stem direction in the original post. In Schenker's faithfully reproduced edition of the Beethoven sonatas, we see precisely the opposite - notes in one voice or layer that Beethoven stems all-up or all-down (without rests) in anticipation of the opposite voic...

Re: How best to show alternative words for singer?

In this day and age when composers seem to have an allergy to individual flags for syllabification, and when rhythms are becoming increasingly complex - I wouldn't dare leave out the slur, whether dotted or not.

Re: Optical spacing

Sibelius chokes and dies as soon as you throw anything into the spacing engine other than notes. Lyrics, in particular, never fail to screw up the look of the page. Amazing that it hasn't been improved after all this time.

Re: Legatos in the vocal music

I'm opposed to using slurs to show phrasing in general. I think it dilutes the meaning of a slur as "pure" legato. I maintain that the best tool for this situation is "molto legato" and breath marks to indicate the end of a phrase. David, could you give me an example of what you'...

Re: Legatos in the vocal music

David, obviously it depends on the composer in question. I find Bach's "angular" vocal lines with many syllables to be nonetheless very idiomatic because he expects each one to be separately articulated. It's the combination of the "Romantic legato" that's never interrupted and i...
