Re: crowded voices

Thanks so much for asking him about that, David. I am afraid that I must respectfully dispute his opinion … … One should perhaps remember that this Kodály piece is so much in Rohan's memory that nowadays he very rarely refers to the written score. Unfortunately, I didn't get round to asking him abo...

Re: Dynamics: the optical center

Verdi added a ppppppp in red crayon heavily circled to a vocal score to apply to a tenor's top B flat, but probably just to stop it from being the usual showy ff . More oddly, Puccini (I've just checked and found these in both Tosca and Bohème ) sometimes marks the harp pppp , and I'm fairly sure th...

Re: crowded voices

That is a unique opportunity, David, please do inquire about the Kodaly notation. I had the chance to converse at length with Rohan about a wide range of notational and other musical matters, both after the concert and over the next morning's porridge. He did not think that Kodály's use of two stav...

Re: Pencils for music

One important thing is eraser, and my favorite is Faber-Castel Dust-Free, which is very good to roll away the dust. Thanks for the tip. I've just ordered 8 (4x2) Faber-Castel Dust-Free on-line. An efficient and clean eraser is crucial. (When I was at school, long ago, we referred to erasers as 'Ind...

Re: Pencils for music

I use Staedtler 3B, currently Tradition, although sometimes Lumograph (depending on availability when I order at least 6 dozen &c). I have a substantial supply of left-hand and right-hand A3 paper printed with each of 14, 18, 24 & 28 staves (the difference between left-hand and right-hand pa...
