As mentioned in this and another thread, I think that multiplicity of responsible editions of standard works, whether by major publishers or by individuals, is a very good thing as a way to share musical knowledge. The difference is more apparent the further back in time you go...'. As you imply, the difference between the two has become less now, with the "Urtext" editions being a kind of hybrid of the two. Perhaps the essential difference between the older type of performing edition and a current ...

Thanks, OCTO. That saved me from ordering the Williams, which is not my cup of tea. I think I'll wait for a report on the Kelly, Mark, I am concerned that it might be more of a coffee table book and not deal in enough detail with areas that interest me.

Thanks for bringing this up, Mark. I will order the Williams, as well. I suspect, though, that it doesn't have the kind of detail that would be most interesting: who first started doing this or that and when.

I think that your concern about version 2 was justified. Students tend to exaggerate the shortness of shortened notes.

Sorry, Schonbergian, I don't quite get the second part of your post, since I don't think I ever referred to either eight note, just the dotted eighth and sixteenth. But if you think that the first eighth note of the pair in the first measure should also be marked staccato, that is certainly possible...
