Re: How to find a freelance engraver?
DatOrganistTho, Your little scene describes the situation so well. A similar dialogue often goes on in an arranger's own mind as his practical sense fights with his own misguided desire to be "faithful to the original" in the wrong way. Of course, Brahms didn't mean to produce something s...

Re: FontForge and Finale
Make sure that you don't have too many fonts "Installed" on your computer. I had this problem with LilyPond a while back trying to get text fonts to change. Seems to be that when you install a font your computer "loads" it into system memory, so that it can be easily rendered or ...

Re: Mastering Rachmaninoff
John, your thoughts are very important and reasoning is valid. I also believe if there is an "amen" given by composer for a particular engraved piece it should be followed. The only doubt I have is sincerity of B&H: by 1992 they owned the full copyright of R and I also believe they wa...

Re: Mastering Rachmaninoff
I wish that the forum members who are treating Rachmaninoff's text with such freedom could read the following article by Robert Threlfall, the editor of the Boosey and Hawkes edition of the Complete Preludes, which is now highly regarded because Threlfall was given access to the manuscripts of the ...

Re: Mastering Rachmaninoff
First edition: Including them within the slurs to place them very close to the lowest RH voice shows that the swell is mainly for this voice. I've seen swells within slurs in many scores, but have never heard that they point to any particular voice in a chord. The fact that the bottom right-hand vo...

Re: Mastering Rachmaninoff
Dear DatOrganistTho, sorry for not being so clear. Here I will try to describe what I mean more precisely. Could you explain what you are meaning by BW-balance? Are you saying the glyphs themselves are too contrasting? Yes. If you look at any score, you can notice if the complete outlook of that sc...

Re: Mastering Rachmaninoff
I agree with OCTO to some degree about the balance and choice of fonts, but this is not the thing I would primarily focus on. Here's what I'd start with: 1. The opening right-hand figure and similar figures in the following measures should have consistent stem direction (stem up) and consistent slu...

Re: Mastering Rachmaninoff
Perhaps I have misled some with what edition I have been consulting. It began with the 1975/6 Muz. edition, and eventually branched over to Henle. Not sure how some feel about that.

Re: Mastering Rachmaninoff
I am left with a question. Why not use the original edition, which is probably very close to the MS, as your primary source? The Muzgiz is a secondary source of dubious merit, and it is so badly engraved. The original edition is superior in every way, from overall layout and density, page turns (no...

Re: Mastering Rachmaninoff
OK, I will start. :) Here are very brief comments, and not all. 1. BW-balance: betweens tenutos, slurs, hairpins, flags, staff/barlines. It is to much different. 2. Hairpins stronger (less white), less opening. 3. Tenutos less black. 4. Some slurs should be edited to be less curved (first bars). So...
