Re: A case study in why not to use sans-serifs

The title and copyright text is irritating, but is there a problem with the actual music? - The piano reduction is the same staff size as the vocal lines when it should be significantly larger. - Slurs have all of the typical ugly features of the unedited SCORE design. - The bass voices are on two ...

Re: Triplets in 6/8

I think that you can leave to the performer to play rubato. There is a great tendency in the new music to notate everything , leaving to the performer nothing except exact execution. I admire Brahms, he just write p or f, and it works beautifully, yet VERY hard to perform. You can post a screenshot ...

"Library" vs "Performance" editions

What is the real difference between these? Perhaps the difference isn't as clear-cut in choral music, my usual environment--but even the Breitkopf Complete Works edition of the Brahms piano works, ostensibly a "library" edition, is perfectly usable (in my eyes) for performance, save the la...

Re: What do you think?

I doubt it personally, based on the textural context, the existence of the F in the bassline already, and the resulting discomfort for pianists. It makes little sense on musical grounds.

Re: Rehearsal letter and Segno

From a musical point of view, the segno would have more immediate importance to me and I would place it below the rehearsal mark (or closer to the staff, in other words)

Re: "Lead" voice moves around ensemble

It honestly depends on how obvious the Hauptstimme is without the explicit marking. There are many times where a voice's emphasis will be clear merely from the context, and where the marking would just clutter the page. Schoenberg ostensibly created the symbol because his music was so complex as to ...

Re: An ossia (or oppure) - is this one clear?

If you want the high G, make that the full-size note. 95% of singers that aren't show-offs (myself included) would take the D as we'd presume it to be your preferred option.

Re: Tips on creating a professional engraving?

I would suggest re-engraving an example you find particularly attractive, or even merely a page of one. Then print it out and compare the two side-by-side, comparing every detail you dislike about yours with whichever you prefer in the reference edition. The goal is not to slavishly copy every nuanc...

Re: Tips on creating a professional engraving?

Maestro is not fundamentally poorly designed -- it's just extremely light and angular (and also looks extremely generic at this point) The two biggest problems I see with modern scores are inappropriate text fonts (TNR is far too high-contrast and light to work as a music font) and careless slurs (f...

Re: So what is generally considered the best all-around Beethoven piano sonatas edition?

I purchased both volumes of the Schenker edition from Dover. The printing is not quite as clear as I would have liked but it is certainly acceptable and a step up from the more recent Dover editions with awful printing. The binding is sewn but not flexible in the slightest, so I will likely have to ...
