Re: 12/8 Question

I just hunted down the relevant phrase in the Durand Salabert style sheet (also by David Bray who compiled the Boosey style sheet):

"on peut grouper les silences au début du group, mais pas à la fin."

Re: Pencils for music

It is very useful to have a pencil that is non reprographic, that is to say, doesn't show up on photocopies. Faber Castell make a non reprographic 0.3 mm "lead" for automatic pencils. Alternatively a light blue colouring pencil will work if used lightly. These are vey useful for drawing al...

Re: 12/8 Question

The brackets in 12/8 (Arnstein) do add to the clarity, and certainly would help a session player sight reading. This is in fact a Concerto solo part, which is a bit different, of course. Generally I think (though I cannot speak for the senior Editor at Boosey) that there is a move towards the use of...

Re: 12/8 Question

John, I understand your point, but IN THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE I think you are over-analysing. The composer knows that his publisher will ask me to notate it this way for 4/4 or 12/8. In this specific example it is not relevant. For this composer we use crotchet rest at the head of the beat and two qua...

Re: 12/8 Question

Maybe his was not the best example, but it was the one most easily to hand on a busy day. however, the notation applies in 12/8 too, this example could be read as 12/8 with triplets removed and the notation would be the same, for this composer for Boosey at least.

Re: Resized staff and symbol sizes

In Finale you can create one category for main staff and one for small staff. When the parts are extracted (this can't yet be done in linked parts), change the font definition of the category appropriate to the full staff size.

Re: 12/8 Question

I have worked often for Boosey & Hawkes, so I'm well acquainted with their style sheet. However, it should be understood that this is a default for 99% of work, but negotiable on a case by case basis when legibility becomes an issue. When, for example, I'm working on scores by HK Gruber who uses...

Re: BW-balance

The term usually used is "greyness". With text it is easy to achieve, but with music it is more difficult, and especially with many modern scores the concept has to be ignored.
