Re: Please enlighten me on the meaning of...

Nicholas, G, if that is Dorico, can the S-shaped slur be made to look more like the original, or maybe even better? (Sorry, not NicholasG, again ) Here's the Debussy snippet in Dorico with a 2-segment S-shaped slur (all slurs have been manually adjusted, but with better starting settings than the d...

Re: Lyric Extenders on Long Vowels

I would have expected Lilypond to handle extensions correctly by default. If you're looking for a good book of music engraving rules, I can recommend Elaine Gould's "Behind bars", from Faber Music. LilyPond isn't automated, but that's okay. I'm aware of the rules right now, and it wasn't ...

Re: Lyric Extenders on Long Vowels

I would suggest that it is not acceptable to do without extension lines. The work tends to look unfinished without. Whatever the merits or usefulness of the practice, it is what singers expect, and anything unexpected is a source of confusion. Extensions should be used on the last syllable, if it h...

Lyric Extenders on Long Vowels

I'm typesetting this portion of the "Kyrie" for a composer, and I noticed he has long melismas on open vowels (see below). Kyrie Eleison problem.png Kyrie Eleison problem 2.png My question is, is it acceptable to leave them without extenders? Technically that follows the "rules."...

Re: Let's talk Manuscript Paper

I do not buy premade manuscript paper. This is because the contrast is usually really strong, and I like a manuscript paper to be lighter than that. So, I make my own and send it to a printer. I use blue or gray as the color of the staff lines. I'll upload those bits soon. I make it all in LilyPond ...

Re: How to Write for PERCUSSION by Samuel Z. Solomon

One thing I'd like to warn, considering I have a relative who is a professional (concert) percussionist, that these sorts of engraving issues are still on this side of convention and passe. Because of the uniqueness and relative age of percussion notation, even though there is a general consensus in...

Re: Music Type Foundry - new fonts!

Great to hear, tisimst! I would be more than happy to use many of them! If I might as you, will they be mapped for Finale as the Maestro table? Or it will be SMULF so that a plug-in "translates" symbols from to another? If you need any help, I am, we are here! Excellent! I will be creatin...

Re: Exotic grace notes in Boulez

I love how LilyPond handles it. I think I know what tisimst had to do, and it was relatively straight forward.

I have one question for tisimst, in the source, did the "grace" notes remain "grace notes" in the code, or are they modified with magstep or scale?

Re: Music Type Foundry - new fonts!

This is fabulous news!

Are these new fonts "optically scaled" like Emmentaler?

Re: OTF in Finale, and problems

... reason for the SMuFL. Lots of people bash it, ... I never heard this, at least in the Smufl-discussion list. What is the criticism? And what the alternative? Finale and Sibelius hardcore users bash SMuFL because of it's "Re-inventing the wheel." I've read on the finale forums (the off...
