Re: Spacing proportions and settings

Fred, since page turns in solo piano music are for the convenience of the player in learning music and in "performing" for themselves, a G.P. would be an ideal page turn rather than a disturbance. Of course, it would be a different story in piano chamber music. As I said, B was just a conv...

Re: Spacing proportions and settings

OCTO, it is clear you are acutely sensitive to the "feel" of musical notation. Some of the current engraving practices must drive you crazy. erelievonen, you and I are kindred sprits on the issue of page turns! Poor edition B was a stand-in for the current editions that are under copyright...

Re: Spacing proportions and settings

Here are three files for the Schubert Bb Sonata for piano solo. B has a modern layout philosphy. C. is extreme in its desire for white space. Please note the number of pages for each. A Breitkopf und Haertel Schubert Complete Works (1888) 30 pages http://burrito.whatbox.ca:15263/imglnks/usimg/5/5e/I...

Re: Notational curiosity?

Thanks, Knut and OCTO, I really appreciate your input. I will leave it as is, but thicken the tips.

OCTO, Neumann in "Ornamentation and Improvisation in Mozart" thinks that the Cosi excerpt should receive extensive ornamentation and gives an example (p. 220) that is VERY a piacere!

Re: 12/8 Question

In other words, everyone now has a computer with Finale or Sibelius installed. You are even more of pessimist than I am, Peter! Well, with the help of this and the Finale and Sibelius forums, we are going to turn this thing around. "half rests in 3/2 ok, but not in 6/4" Thank goodness. And...

Re: Spacing proportions and settings

This might or might not be a good point to bring up a subject that greatly concerns me. So much engraving that I see now looks too spread out on the page. I first saw this during the early 70s in the piano publications of Alfred Music Co. Music that previously occupied two facing pages, was now spre...

Re: Notational curiosity?

Thanks so much, OCTO. That is very helpful. It IS a very tricky notation. Here is the Old Mozart Edition: Mozart Cosi fermata.jpg not great. The New Mozart has something that looks very much like mine but is darker and thicker at the ends as you have suggested. We think of the fermata as being a hal...

Re: BW-balance

The clef is quite ugly, but I think that it would be very helpful to see a page example of bad BW balance.

Re: Arnstein and the "whole measure rest"

Fred, I am glad that we agree on this issue, and Arnstein agrees with you about the beaming of the 16ths. (I will in the near future give Arnstein's views on beaming.) I didn't break the secondary beams in the Arnstein manner, because I didn't want to steer the conversation to the beaming issue, sin...

Re: Arnstein and the "whole measure rest"

As I said, I think this one transcends pen and ink. I am a very good sight reader, yet I would certainly prefer the Arnstein versions in the following examples: Whole Measure Rest.jpg The traditional notation is perfectly legible, but the Arnstein is more "user friendly" and helpful to the...
