Re: Dorico development issue

... and more from actual music rather than just books on music notation. I agree of course, but the problem is you can find examples of almost anything in print. I know I've had to read some absolutely horribly engraved music before. With the notation books at least someone has given some amount of...

Re: Dorico development issue

Engraving "rules" evolve and adapt over time to suit the needs of performers and conductors. Generally speaking, they evolve in the direction of facilitating sightreading, and consistency is a key factor with this. Gould has quite a few prescriptions that are either regional or anachronist...

Re: PPP

That's two separate references within a short time span (1789-1791) for ppp then. Clearly it must have been in use by some composers around that time. It would be interesting to see an actual musical example if someone could find one, but in terms of answering the original question of "approxim...

Re: PPP

Can anyone translate the **) footnote in John's top image? It looks like it's saying something about ppp but Google Translate on my phone isn't too happy with it.

ppp is listed in the Tromlitz flute treatise from 1791, so must have been in use by then anyway.

Re: circa

K. Stockhausen has something like 93.6 markings, I believe he wants to get EXACT tempo transition (ratio). I've seen way more decimal places than that in Film and TV work. I was in the "house band" for a Netflix show a few years ago, and we routinely had parts with multiple decimal places...

Re: Dorico v Finale advice?

Dorico staff have made some great videos ranging from very basic "what to do first" videos to ones covering more complex notation issues. I have to admit that a FEW of their videos are a bit lacking since the employee in question tends to get distracted by user questions (most of these vi...

Re: Dorico v Finale advice?

I still tend to hurl myself at things, so I *may* ignore the good advice of both of you and hurl myself at attempting this larger project in Dorico. I'll only have myself to blame if it fails. If you do decide to just jump in with a larger project, I would at least work through their published &quo...

Re: Specific chord voicings in a lead sheet

I did make an effort to find other solutions. What would be the "standard solution"? Ugh, sorry, I thought I responded to this, but I guess it didn't post and the draft didn't save so here's "take 2." Now that I see it, your solution actually looks pretty good! I would change th...

Re: Dorico v Finale advice?

Fred, would ‘Condensing Change’ be a possible way of dealing with Michel's problem here https://notat.io/viewtopic.php?t=990 ? It looks like a very useful facility, but no doubt it has its limitations. I don't think so. I think it's a current limitation of condensing when doubling players are invol...
