Re: Beam thickness

I'm pretty sure beam thickness is fairly standard at a 1/2 space. If it's larger than that, won't it mess up some of the sit-straddle-hang rules designed to avoid wedges? As long as the increased thickness is achieved at the expense of the gap between the primary and secondary beams, as in Octo's e...

Re: Dynamics: the optical center

I find the differing opinions so far very interesting, but problematic considering I'm trying to define the ideal center point for a majority of users. Peter's point about how the italicized shape influences the optical center is pretty much right on the money. The individual shape and size of the c...

Dynamics: the optical center

I wasn't sure wether to post this here or in the 'Type and Font Design' section, but since I think this topic warrants a broader discussion, it ended up in this part of the forum. There aren't many set rules concerning the horizontal placement of dynamics. Elaine Gould stipulates the well known conv...

Re: Accents: size and shape

However, the large ones don't seem quite centered to me and might move to the left a little. I think that would help distinguish it from the short diminuendo marking. You're right, they are not. Accents of this size are rarely centered on the note, because they would collide with the accidental in ...

Re: Accents: size and shape

Your analysis makes sense, and you seem to have a good foundation (most certainly better than my own) to determine the meaning of this marking and it's distinction. My primary issue though, is of course the look of the accent mark in relation to a short diminuendo or 'intensity mark', not the meanin...

Re: Accents: size and shape

Yes, please make a beautiful assortment of such accents. […] The longer ones should not be too wide. Well, all of the above will fin into one staff space (the large ones will touch the staff line above and below, though) so I think they're fine in this respect. SMuFL already lists (relatively short...

Re: Accents: size and shape

Thanks you all for your thoughts on this! John, the mark you're referring to is unknown to me. Do you know if it is related to what is referred to (in SMuFL at least) as a Messa di voce; a short crescendo and diminuendo typically placed under a note. I've seen that symbol commonly replaced by two op...

Re: Algorithms of accidental spacings

In the Scriabin example, I like the engraver's tucking the natural under the rest in the RH of measure 3. That's the kind of thing I like to do if I have the time to spend! This is the sort of thing that will be much improved with the advent of SMuFL, given that it stores information about each ind...

Re: Accents: size and shape

I very much like the bent lines of the two centre examples. Next to them, the other accents seem stiff, although the smaller accents on the right slightly less so. The centre examples would fit very well into a font with rounded edges and slightly irregular, 'organic' shapes, like the November font...
