I wouldn’t use a flat beam. I’ve always been in the camp that the beam should trend (i.e., slant) with the trend of the notes. Fred, that’s a rather unsavory discovery. There was always something that didn’t quite look right to me and I think this must have been it. The curve shoulders visually always stuck out just a little bit more.

Looking at the first example again, you’ll notice there’s an identical pair of notes in the second measure that looks totally fine by comparison. I guarantee, if you had only shown the second (adjusted) passage, not a single person would have noticed them being thicker. “No glyph” is a filler symbol to say that a glyph doesn’t esoteric at that codepoint in the font that the software is trying to access. Perfectly normal, though I can understand if it was unexpected.
