The State of the Art, circa 1991
Went down a bit of a rabbit hole today and stumbled on a review summarizing the state of music notation software 30 years ago. For anyone with a JSTOR account the review is simply titled "Music Notation Software" and is by Karl Signell, published in the Journal of the American Musicologica...

Re: Music Pubisher Software
Here is what Gould says about long slurs: I think you have the Boosey guide and it has some good slur advice in it. The Schirmer guide is good too. (That one is all in SCORE) If you want to see extreme non-curviness in a notation guide check out the Button/Elgar book "System in Musical Notatio...

Re: Music Pubisher Software
Here is an example in Finale with my default settings, which I think is already better than the Henle, and then with some hand adjustment: Did you offset Layer 2 in the right hand of the "default" example with the Note Position Tool? Or is there a setting to do that? If that was an automa...

Re: Music Pubisher Software
One can look through the whole piece at: https://www.henle.de/us/detail/?Title=Clarinet+Trio+a+minor+op.+114+for+Piano%2C+Clarinet+%28Viola%29+and+Violoncello_1125 After perusing through your link, the detail that really jumped out to me was the beam slant settings. Perhaps this is due the the fact...

Re: Music Pubisher Software
Also Alfred. It's probably worth pointing out that Alfred and Finale have the same parent company, Peaksware. I've been curious what effect, if any, that acquisition has had on Finale's development. Obviously there would be an incentive to keep the Alfred folks happy, but other than SMuFL and compa...

Re: Notations 21
Bumping an old thread because I thought this was hilarious! Here's what Amazon was recommending to me today: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51624634374_645d3ec3a8_b.jpg Laptop computers: Fair, mine is too old for Windows 11 Flatware sets: ??? Um, Notations 21 is a pretty cool out of print book,...

Re: Dorico slurs and beams
I don't know, I guess I find it easier on my eyes than all the glare from white. I use it for any app that supports it and I honestly had forgotten Dorico even had a light theme. In Dorico, dark mode seems to keep the focus on the music. I don't have an issue with the lack of contrast yet, but I did...

Re: Dorico slurs and beams
I cranked my narrow beam threshold way down for testing so it's essentially turned off in anything I posted here. I found it was affecting too many things. I'll turn it back up for actual work, but it seemed like it was just getting in the way because I couldn't always tell what was as result of the...

Re: Dorico slurs and beams
To be honest, although my settings don't make sense, they still seem to provide a good compromise. I'm finding a lot of my settings don't make sense! All my n/8 beam angles are nonsensical, but I guess they are better thought of as just numbers that are needed to interact with all the other variabl...
