Re: Stem Direction question
I think there is something to be said for maintaining stem direction in historical work. I think there's also less of a reading/sightreading issue with solo piano work as it will most likely not be dropped in front of a pianist in a studio to be sightread at a recording. (For the same reason, smalle...

Re: Stem Direction question
Where would you suggest looking for it? I would just set up an eBay alert to get notified when one pops up. I can't remember if I got mine on eBay, Abe Books, or elsewhere, but I've definitely bought lots of stuff after getting an eBay alert. I really like it because it's reasonably short at 85 pag...

Re: Stem Direction question
Arnstein was also a stem-down-on-the-middle-line-only guy. However, this rule may now be in flux. I guess I don't see any musical reason for this rule to even be in flux, when it seems to have been "settled law" and applied fairly consistently for 50+ years now. "It looks prettier&qu...

Re: Stem Direction question
Carl Rosenthal's book Practical Guide to Music Notation for Composers, Arrangers and Editors (1962) is one of my favorite little notation books that I never really see get discussed much. He has this on pages 3-4 where he mentions that "consistent stemming seems to permit easier and faster read...

Re: Stem Direction question
Others prefer the middle-line stem to always be down for consistency, unless there is some compelling reason to flip it. This way the middle-line pitch always has the same stem direction unless it is part of a beamed group. This is makes the middle-line stem consistent with any other line or space ...

Re: On the use of tablets and BT page turners
A bunch of Dorico settings get embedded into the file at the time of creation, so some doricolib files should automatically "work," and some need to be imported into existing files with the Library Manager, but will automatically "work" with File/New files. I think the additional...

Re: On the use of tablets and BT page turners
Sorry, I'm on PC so am not completely sure where it lives on a Mac, but the DefaultLibraryAdditions folder should be in the the same folder as your userlibrary.xml file. If it's not already there, you can create it. If you use any VSL libraries, the VSL installer will have already created it too. On...

Re: On the use of tablets and BT page turners
Could you share this as a doricolib file? Or how do you save this code as a doricolib file outside of Dorico? I'm on macOS. We can't share files on here, can we? Hmm, I keep getting a 403 error if I post the whole code, so here's a Dropbox link. Let me know if it doesn't work. In addition to some i...

Re: On the use of tablets and BT page turners
I'm good friends with Harry Connick Jr.'s copyist, and they've been using digital music for over 20 years now. Here's a NY Times article about his system from 2002. I subbed in his band shortly after that, and it was pretty interesting! Everything was controlled by foot pedals and everything was com...

Re: Repetitions in early classical notation
"col" (with) or just "c" has been manuscript shorthand for centuries. I'm assuming here it just means the Viola continues the same line as the Basso Continuo group (Fondamento) but at the octave above as notated.
