Re: Comment on text on staff
I find the upper one preferable as it concentrates the relevant information. Dogmatically moving the text further away from the staff to avoid a collision makes it harder to understand all three directions at a glance.

Re: Ledger line thickness
Ledger lines should, at a minimum, be thicker enough than staff lines so that they subjectively appear the same thickness as staff lines. I go further than that, because I believe it's easier to count just ledger lines at a distance than staff lines + ledger lines. In the Schenker edition of Beethov...

Re: Bärenreiter Urtext (English version)
I agree that MuseScore has basically surpassed Finale's default output. My comment was more that Baerenreiter would probably balk at using an open-source program and go with something commercial.

Re: Bärenreiter Urtext (English version)
The slurs are the giveaway. The note spacing is too good (not saying much) to be Sibelius, I can't imagine them using MuseScore, and it's definitely not LilyPond.

Re: Bärenreiter Urtext (English version)
Software looks to be Finale with Palatino Linotype and the Vienna music font.
John, is the slur in m.3 RH an error in the first edition or in the Baerenreiter?

Re: Bärenreiter Urtext (English version)
Not only are the noteheads too small, the staff size is smaller than the Schenker edition and most piano scores I've seen, including past Baerenreiter keyboard scores.

Re: Arpeggio indication: slower
How fast is usual? To me, it always depends on the character and mood of the piece, and there is no default speed. For anything out of character with the piece, it might be best to write it out as in Beethoven Op. 31/2 mvt. 3.

Re: Very Short Octave Sign Rant
The 8va text looks to just be boilerplate italic New Century Schoolbook.

Re: Very Short Octave Sign Rant
MuseScore's default is definitely the best, but I think I still prefer John's overall for consistency with engraved scores.

The larger, more widely spaced dashes are more bothersome to me than the redundant va.
