Re: Beaming conventions
However, when such patterns appear in solo or chamber music, it would depend on what the composer is expressing. I can imagine cases where secondary beam breaks would be visually disruptive and suggest an inner accentuation where none is desired. Examples by JS Bach come to mind: … But what is your...

Re: Beaming conventions
Thanks, John – I like it! What is your opinion of breaking the secondary beams for the last eight 32nd notes?

Re: Cautionary clef when strings divide?
Tricky case. I would avoid showing the clef by writing the unison material on the 2nd Cello staff for at least that system.
This would be fine in the part if there is a system break in the same place, but if not, then you have a whole other problem.

Re: Beaming conventions
Most people today seem to prefer (as John says) a dot on a down-stem line-note to go in the space below. I generally do not prefer this; it continues to look strange and wrong to me even after over a quarter century working with computer software. But in the particular case of this excerpt the lower...

Re: Beaming on Sibelius VS Finale
I have always seen the same misalignment whether I zoom in Sib itself or any PDF viewing engine.

Re: Dorico
It’s no surprise that the 1.0 release of Dorico lacks some customizing capabilities such as fine-tuning spacing, that we in this forum relish. We are a niche market, even within music copying. Just think of all the music professionals out there who will never touch such controls — precisely because ...

Re: Beaming on Sibelius VS Finale
I noticed this as soon as I zoomed in past 400% in Sibelius 1.4 back in 2000. I find this tiny misalignment is NEVER an issue when reading at any reasonable size, either printed on paper or in PDF. It’s just not perceptible.

Re: [LilyPond] Strait slurs and more.
Great news! Weird examples. Perhaps someone can post in this thread a more practical example of what Lilypond can do with a slur now that it couldn’t before.

Re: Pausing in Debussy
I’m in favor of dotted rests when: a. the value is the beat (e.g. :4dr in 6/8) b. the value is a sensible division of a long bar (e.g. :5d rest in 12/8)* c. combined with one or more pickup notes they constitute a beat (e.g. :3dr :2 in 4/4) I haven’t thought this through quite thoroughly, so probabl...

Re: Single note-measure placement
[Off topic:] I got Sibelius 1.4 at the end of 2000 and stopped taking Finale work in early 2004. There was no comparison in ease of use. I had gotten to know Finale quite well in the 1990s, from v. 1.0 on. In early 1989 I spent weeks editing a 9-page letter to the company (then Coda Music Software) ...
