Re: Figured bass font in Sibelius
That looks very good to me, Harpsichordmaker. The distance of the figures from the staff looks best when the systems are not too close together as on most of the pages. But if the systems are close, the figures might be a little closer to the staves they are associated with. For example, the first f...

Re: Figured bass font in Sibelius
In case you are looking for a general impression, I find the DS font much more visible and therefore more appropriate for figured bass than Opus. However, the symbols are a little large and positioned a little far from the staff and from each other vertically for my taste. On the other hand, the 76 ...

And on the subject of interestingly shaped slurs, I noticed some wonderfully striking ones encompassing several instrumental staves at a time in the score of Berg's Lulu... I can imagine, David, given some of the beauties I see in the vocal score available at IMSLP! (USA and Canada only) His Piano ...

Dotting and articulating a note before it has been inserted seems aimed at those who type music only. It is inconceivable for someone who writes music using a pencil and paper.

Thanks, NicholasG, I appreciate that. I put in a suggestion to MM that they should incorporate a Illustrator-type pen tool to make these sort of tasks a bit easier. I haven't gotten a reply as yet. My very last thread at the MM music forum was such a request. I also mentioned that I made the same re...

Here is the Barber done in Finale with one slur only. The lack of sufficient control points is clear: Barber 1 slur Finale .jpg Here is one done in Finale with 3 slurs. I am not experienced in putting slurs together, but I find this result promising and at least better than the original edition whic...

Here is the Debussy slur done in Finale. It is one slur only and further tweaking is certainly possible. Such slurs are not difficult in Finale. It is the less common ones as well as the ability to tweak slurs to get exactly what one wants that is the problem,

One such case occurs on the last page of Prelude 5 from Book 1 of Debussy's Preludes: Debussy S-slur.jpg To expand on Knut's astute comment, Barber is concerned about the player making a good legato line at a place where there are things going against it: the leap of a ninth places the thumb on a bl...

Re: Dorico Finale Side by Side
That is a marked improvement and very encouraging. It looks more like software that I could actually use. But given all the care that has gone into Dorico, I don't understand why its default settings are so out of whack. Along with the problems that you have corrected: 1. the accidentals and note he...

Re: Composer vs Engravers: Cautionary Accidentals
You are welcome, MJCube. We often have a very similar viewpoint on these things. As you point out, engraving speed or convenience is really not an issue in this kind of work where one doesn't expect or want a program to make decisions of this kind. I want a program to give me as many tools as possib...
