I like the first solution suggested by MalteM.

Re: Did it Really Matter? part 3

Ha! Now that I find very interesting. I'm now listening to it in my head as I hope it is intended, based on your analysis. Unfortunately it is quite beyond me to play it in effective context, but I do have a vivid ‘inner ear.’ Yes, I believe you are right. Thank you for this wonderful insight.

Re: Annual Notation Software Survey

I suspect (but I may be wrong) that the switch from Sibelius to Dorico seems less daunting than the switch from Finale. As long as Finale remains functional, I suspect I'll stick with it despite the many frustrations. I suppose if no professional copyists/engravers were willing to work on composers'...

Re: Beethoven Slurs 3

I wonder how one might best extend these thoughts to Beethoven's various bowing, slurring and other legato markings in his orchestral string writing. There was a style of playing in the mid-20th century (Karajan et al) in which slurred and unslurred notes tended to sound identical: one could not hea...

Re: Vocal score

Superb! Thank you very much John, this (either) is just what I need.

What a pity that you are not doing the whole vocal score, as I'm certain you'd make a very much better job of it than will I.

Re: Vocal score

Might the simplest answer be to have the clarinet on a cue stave?

Vocal score

It seems likely that I'll have to make my own vocal score of the piece a page of which is in the attached screenshot. I did start by making a draft vocal score as I went along, but inevitably have abandoned that idea. Anyway, the page shown looks simplicity itself ( :4 = 60) until you notice that on...

Re: Notesizes in Strauss Don Quixote (Jos. Aibl Verlag / UE)

I've not been aware of this before, but it certainly seems to be something to to add to one's armoury of possible solutions to problems. To be used with care. In Finale I don't think there's any way to have one note size for the score and another for the part, so one would have to restore the full n...

Ah that's it, not the telephone line at all… Thank you very much for this. Perhaps we should all contribute something to the cost of the certificate.
