Re: [WORKBENCH] Brahms Op. 119, No. 1

Thanks for the Dorico sample, Knut. A cynic might say that Dorico gives unwary engravers a bit more rope to hang themselves with. Haha, good one, John! Even from a less cynical viewpoint, I think there is a real danger that the impressive amount of automation which Dorico brings to bear will have a...

Re: [WORKBENCH] Brahms Op. 119, No. 1

@ Knut: Thanks for the Dorico example. To be honest, after what you've said earlier, I'm pleasantly surprised at the default output that Dorico produces. The biggest advantage over Sibelius is probably note spacing. There are so many places where spacing needs to be adjusted in Sibelius, it's quite...

Re: [WORKBENCH] Brahms Op. 119, No. 1

Seeing liuscorne's default Sibelius output, which I think is somewhat comparable to what Finale would output without any manual intervention, it's quite clear that my previous statement was a bit harsh. Here's the Dorico output without any manual adjustments whatsoever: Intermezzo Piano 1.png This i...

Re: [WORKBENCH] Brahms Op. 119, No. 1

Perhaps someone will add a Dorico example ... I did the first page as a test case when I first got Dorico, but I was not particularly impressed with the results. Of course, with an equivalent amount of time spent on manual adjustments as I did with my Finale engraving, the results would have been a...

Re: A case for slab serifs in music

Knut, congratulations! This must have been a huge amount of work... a set of beautiful text fonts that work very well with your music font. I like the italics especially! And that G-clef is a miraculous fusion of balance and character. Thank you, Florian! It's been a huge amount of work, indeed, an...

Re: A case for slab serifs in music

BTW: The font used for "Edition Peters" in my example is called Tenso. You can get the Regular weight for free: https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/exljbris/tenso/ Tenso comes quite close in appearance to the original Peters scores. Since the original is basically a sans serif version of the Sc...

Re: A case for slab serifs in music

your EDITION PETERS looks a bit problematic with the kerning or spacing, the spacing between P and E, D iti on .. or maybe my monitor resolution I don't see the problem in print from the pdf, so I think this must be a display/hinting issue. In any case, I didn't design the sans serif font, so I hav...

Re: A case for slab serifs in music

BTW: The music font is my own. It is actually based on hand-engraved scores by Peters, though not from the particular time and in the particular style used in the score that Schonbergian referred to. the G clef looks like SCORE or Partita font .. but i prefer this one I agree about the SCORE compar...

Re: A case for slab serifs in music

I especially like the numerals. However, if I were to use this in my own publications, I would need a heavier variant - that being said, the design itself is excellent. Thank you! Glad you like the numerals, and BTW, open style 4 and 1 with diagonal terminal (as commonly seen in time signatures) wi...
