Re: Musicwriter - in use throughout the world
When I was a student in NYC, I spent several weeks engraving on one of those for a small choral music publisher. They were happy to give me one-on-one instruction, since so few people knew how to use one. Coordinating music and text was harrowing. I eventually quit to have more time for piano practi...

Re: Brahms vs Joachim on articulation
It's a two-level legato mark. They begin to be seen in the later Romantic stye, but I have seen them in earlier manuscripts (but usually omitted by the composer or editor in the first editions as esoteric.) Classic style composers could use short legato slurs without fear of performers clipping the ...

Re: The treble clef as handwritten by great composers
I agree completely with jan. odod's new font is an instant classic, and I want to buy a copy as soon as it is available for Finale.

Re: Composers vs Engravers: Contraindications
I am sorry, Schonbergian, but I'd have to see examples to comment further. As far as I know, Bach adhered to the standard beaming rules used for instrumental and vocal music used up until the relatively recent time when some composes started to beam vocal music like instrumental music.

Composers vs Engravers: Flags vs Beams
Chopin's Etude op 25 no 4 is an ingenious study in rhythm as well as in left hand agility. It also makes an excellent case study because the composer's MS with his own corrections still exists as does a copy of the same by his student Fontana. Three kinds of texture alternate in this piece: 1. It st...

Re: Composers vs Engravers: Contraindications
does it also apply to a composer's computer notation? I hope that I am not missing the point, but as far as computer "manuscripts", it would seem to me to be far simpler to ascertain the composer's intentions than with handwritten manuscripts being engraving by other parties, since the co...

Re: Composer vs Engravers: Contraindications
With other composers than Chopin, how are we to know when an example falls into 1 or 2 rather than 3? This is an excellent question, and I plan to give examples by other composers. Chopin is actually an exceptionally difficult case, because of the number of conflicting original sources, his constan...

Re: Composer vs Engravers: Contraindications
Thanks for your comment, OCTO, which advances the discussion. As you say, the MS is visually appealing because it has visual logic given the crowding. However, the crowding is the unfortunate result of pre-lined music paper and there is no apparent musical logic to the notation. As far as I am conce...
