A case study in why not to use sans-serifs
We will be performing Brahms's Begraebnisgesang in the coming months with organ accompaniment, and I was surprised to find out that only one score with keyboard reduction has been published - a modern edition by Breitkopf. I could scarcely prepare myself for the horror I was about to see when I clic...

Re: On style guides
Yeah, that helps. What is the best way to ensure consistency across programs that I am not personally familiar with? There are fonts that can work across programs, but if (for instance) I wanted a copying team to be able to duplicate my LilyPond style within MuseScore and Finale, how would I work ou...

Re: On style guides
Let's say someone was totally unaware of the style I use to publish my personal things, and I wanted to ensure that they came as close as possible. What would you need in order to replicate my style, or one of any of the members here, without being aware of their personal style otherwise?

On style guides
What do you, as engravers, look for in publisher-specific style guides? What do you find helpful and unhelpful? Is there anything not included in the most common style guides which you would like to see or which could be extremely helpful?

Re: Notatio members meeting
Very cool. I wonder if some sort of meeting could be arranged for our North American members as well.

Re: The treble clef as handwritten by great composers
I dislike the "handwritten" style used by most of these composers, missing the bottom loop. Schoenberg's is the only one that approaches the shape of a punched G clef. Of the "handwritten" ones, Lotti's and Chopin's early are my favourites.

Re: tied quavers everywhere!
I agree on the overnotation problem in modern music. My university composition professor insists on exact metronome markings, explicit "con/senza pedale", not using hairpins without explicit dynamic markings on either end, and so on. She insists it's for "precision", but I just f...

Re: tied quavers everywhere!
I remember discussing it on the Finale forum in the past, but I'm unable to track down the thread. We've discussed it before and you (!) recommended Berthold City Light Italic as the closest match. It's not perfect, but I've not been able to find anything closer since. Novello used the same font fo...
