[ANN] Ten Music Notation Programs, second edition

This document presents a one-page score as engraved by ten of the most popular music notation programs: Dorico, Encore, Finale, LilyPond, MuseScore, Music Press, Notion, Overture, Score, and Sibelius. Although all of these applications feature extensive flexibility and offer high quality engraving, ...

Re: SCORE Music Publishing System VS. Graphire Music Press

As info, Graphire Music Press is now sold and supported by Mansfield Music. Contact: Ernie Mansfield <ernie@mansfieldmusic.com> Support is through a Yahoo group. If I remember correctly, the price for either Windows or Mac (OS 9 or earlier, or SheepShaver emulation) is $140 (this post originally sai...

Forthcoming Dorico update

Details at http://www.scoringnotes.com/news/will-i ... co-update/.

I wonder what sales figures are like. For that matter, I wonder what relative sales are for Fin and Sib.

Re: re: Ten Music Notation Programs

Hi Fred, In Overture the eighth rest is movable; in mms 8 and 11 I just centered them vertically between notes, with the last rest in m 11 the same as the one before it. I don't think the repeat sign can be altered, at least in Overture 4; I don't know about Overture 5. All stem lengths can be adjus...

re: Ten Music Notation Programs

This engraving comparison of a one-page score for classical guitar as done in Dorico, Encore, Finale, LilyPond, MuseScore, Music Press, Notion, Overture, Score and Sibelius, has a new link because Dropbox has made some changes. It's now at: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xl09lf616xspl2n/Ten%20Music%20Not...

Re: Text fonts in musical scores

IIRC the plurality of scores I've seen, not just from UE, use Times for text. It's not my favorite font: I like Caslon and Baskerville better, among a few others, but Times is certainly legible and fairly compact.

Re: Software: Overture

This wasn't my review, but a quote of someone's on another forum. I found it interesting but didn't see, for example, how the Finale sample represents modern engraving while LilyPond looks like an older style of e.g. Schirmer. The 8th rest positions in Overture was an oversight, since fixed, but int...

Re: "Ten Music Notation Programs", including Dorico

Could you add NoteAbility to this comparison? It is free software: http://debussy.music.ubc.ca/NoteAbility/index.html For the 10 years this comparison has been around, I've had several requests to add other programs, but I wanted to keep it a comparison of only the most popular applications. I unde...

Re: Software: Overture

It's by Don Williams, who wrote Encore. I started with Deluxe Music Construction Set, moved to Professional Composer, actually learned Finale v. 1, upgraded to 2 and 3, looked for something easier, found Overture 2 much easier, upgraded to 3 and 4. I'm not planning to upgrade to 5, since notation is...
