But couldn't publishers have simply chosen this route earlier? Couldn't they have settled with engraving that was good enough back then too? Are modern editors like, "Meh, optical spacing? It's overrated. Just squeeze in another measure on that line so we use less ink and paper."

Re: I'm No Luddite, But…
What set me off on this (even though it's been brewing for a bit) is browsing through Boosey's online scores. Looking at their two versions of The Rite of Spring is just maddening to me. Their modern, 2013 edition is so, so inexcusably worse than the 1967 edition. The problem isn't that it was engra...

I'm No Luddite, But…
I don't have a problem with more people being able to typeset music using computers and that computers have removed the need for the masses to come to grips with notation rules—letting the software carry that burden. I undestand that knowing Finale/Sibelius/Lilypond/etc doesn't make you a profession...

Re: Posting non-PD music
I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on tv, but… Fair Use allows for copying of music for educational purposes as long as it's not a "performance unit". Whether a forum can be officially classified as an education institution or whatnot, you got me. Also, Fair Use allows for reproduction fo...

Yes it is! It's the choir book, so it's a piano reduction of the orchestra part. Performing that in college was one of my favorite experiences in school.RMK wrote:cGilmore: Is that Symphony of Psalms?

Re: Composers vs Editors: A Helpful Addition?
I am very concerned about copyright issues and posting examples from music under copyright. Is it wrong to post short snippets of the actual published music? I can understand an entire page or whatnot, and I understand the fuzziness of "how many bars are too many bars before it becomes wrong t...

Re: Composers vs Editors: A Helpful Addition?
Completely agree. This just may be the percussion side of me, but with the number, it needs to be appropriately distributed 7+7+7 and leave how that is executed up to performance practice. Without the "21", it seems like the engraver (via the composer of course) can influence the interpret...

Re: Henle App
There is also an argument to be made that the flatter, Henle style beams are more appropriate for the music the above mentioned 'german' publishers, arguably, are best known for, namely urtext editions of polyphonic baroque music. While steeper beam angles can give a positive reflection of the melo...

Re: Henle App
4. the engraving in the hand-engraved Henle editions is beautiful, but, to me, cold Funny, I've had that same thought before. Henle was the first publisher I noticed and led me to look into the world of engraving, so I kind of lean towards them. But there was definitely a point, when comparing to o...
