Re: Dense page
were all those small cues necessary? Were they helpful, worth all the trouble of squeezing them in? Would the violin part have been usable also without them? This piece is one of the most difficult to play together (I haven't played some Ferneyhough, though!), and I can say, not 100% necessary to h...

Re: BW-balance
Related: something I learned early on when I was cutting my teeth writing for orchestra. After writing an orchestration I'll print out the score and just glance at it from a "10,000 foot" level—not paying attention to detail. The grayness factor gives me a really great sense of my overall...

Re: Dense page
It is definitely bigger than A4/Letter, something close to B4. I don't have it now to check.
But I guess that the stave size is between 6.5-7 mm.

Re: Muzitex - for music text
I like Minion Pro and Sabon Minion is generally a very good font as Normal. As italic, it fails for me since it is to much calligraphic. IMHO, there is no need for calligraphy in music text, since it makes to much distinction and so also distraction. Sabon Italic fails for me since it is to curly. ...

Can you share a shot from your score?John Ruggero wrote:I tried the slur, but it seemed too thin, so I used shape no. 34 in the Expression Shapes. It is stretchable in all directions when it comes up.

Dense page
Here is the last page from a violin sonata. 1. It is extreme dense. The engraver was probably enforced to do this: there is no rest in violin part, and it is very heavy to learn by heart. 2. Despite its density it is perfectly readable. I even enjoyed playing from it. Of course some things are on th...

Re: BW-balance
I don't know if anyone else uses this term, but I do for myself and it is the most accurate description I can make about printed music. When I say BW-balance I want to stress the optical experience of musicians: they should never be disturbed in any way. The density is not what I mean directly. It c...

Re: 12/8 Question
John, interesting.
About no 2: triplet brackets are above music, while not completely correct in the frame of notation, is that the way Arnstein does for better legibility?

Muzitex - for music text
I have been searching for a "perfect" (well, in my opinion) text font for expressions and articulation, for many years. I used so far: Times (and NR), Garamond, Minion, Caslon etc... Nothing was satisfying. Either to bold, or not enough visible, or to curved, or to wide... I have created a...
