Isn't using thin staff lines a rather recent trend in (computer) engraving? Maybe you're much younger than what I thought? ;)

Re: Re-setting old Novello Choral Octavo

My first impression, looking at my tablet, that emboldening of all lines would help in getting more overall balance. Also the hairpins for me should have the same line-width as staff lines. The slurs remind me of Sibelius default (endings are more curved than needed, personally I prefer more flat)....

Re: Interesting notation in Aida Act III

The main problem with both MJCube's and John's simplified notations is that they strongly imply that the tremolo is unmeasured. While Verdi's notation strongly implies a measured tremolo.

Re: Interesting notation in Aida Act III

In the first scan, what should one suppose is meant by the way the tremolos for 2nd violins are notated (compare with the more normally notated equivalent tremolo for Flute 3)? I think it means nothing special. The modern rules for notating tremolos were only established in the 20th century; in 19t...

Re: The very first pages of an orchestral score

Different publishers have different house styles – but I would likely do it as in your second example.

Re: Interesting clef inconsistency - any explanations?

That is very nice, although somewhat idiosyncratic hand copying; it is definitely not autography. The beams are not ruled, the stems are not straight, the accent marks and tremolo marks are all over the place. The symbols all vary with each repetition. Autography was done on a drawing board; every ...

Re: Piano - numerous questions

Ere, I wonder if the piano will sound very virtuoso like, perhaps it is not needed, since it is just a part of the orchestra (orchestral piano). Or octaving might reinforce it? Maybe to add at some point only, on crescendos just. Feel free to disregard my suggestion about the octaves. They may inde...

Re: Piano - numerous questions

You're welcome! Ei kestä! How that can be achieved in Finale? As far as I remember, it was not so easy to achieve, because of the beams that become broken. It is indeed a bit tricky to do in Finale. To create the example, I selected Document options > Beams > Extend beams over rests & Extend sec...

Re: Piano - numerous questions

Here I face numerous questions. This example is very quick :4 = 160 or more. About 150 measures if this kind. 1. Is it OK to use so high octave, without 8va? The line moves quickly between low and high notes: without 8va it is obvious the direction. 2. Is it OK to use that way cross-staff, or cross...

Re: Dorico Finale Side by Side

I do not understand why, in the earlier Dorico versions of measure 7, the 5th and 7th 16th-notes are kerned under the preceding notehead, but not the 3rd 16th-note. That makes the spacing look very irregular.
