Has anyone encountered this, written by Mark McGrain, published 1966? The emphasis on the theory of notation is interesting. Archive.org has a PDF:

I bought it longer ago. It is meant for students to learn music notaiton resp. improve their skills. Homwork pages included.
There is nothing particular on "theory", at least I did not notice that, when browsing through.
