Does somebody know the meaning of this notation:

That is "bow vibrato" (i.e. making the rhythm heard by bow pressure only, without stopping the bow between notes).
Sometimes this notation is modernized into a slur with dots on each note. I'm not sure whether that means exactly the same, though.
