Tutti

Post by NicholasG »

I have a string orchestra piece where the Violin 1 section has a solo player for 1 measure (82).
Violin 2 and Viola have 2 notes in the same measure (82).
Cello and base have nothing.
The next measure (83) everyone plays.
Does the tutti go in measure (83) or measure (82) where Violin 2 and Viola have 2 notes?

If I understand your situation correctly, the solo/tutti distinction only relates to the first violin section, and the tutti marking would therefore go in measure 83.

I am not exactly sure how it looks. Can you post a picture?

I'm assuming the tutti goes in measure 83 because that's we're the solo for violin 1 ends. As I said earlier, during the solo in measure 82, Violin 2 and viola play some notes but I'm not sure that constitutes tutti placement.

I guess I'm still confused as to what is happening here. A "tutti" marking in the Vln I part would indicate that all the Violins I are playing as opposed to a solo or smaller sub-grouping. What is happening in the Vln II and Vla parts has no bearing whatsoever on tutti indications in the Vln I part, so I'm failing to see why anything the Vln II or Vla is doing has any relevance, unless I'm completely misunderstanding the situation.

No, you understand completely. You answered my question.
Thanks.
