Errors in Janacek?

This Twitter thread caught my attention https://twitter.com/stuart_macrae/statu ... 4601849856 You may need to scroll up slightly to get the beginning (including the relevant musical example).

Which begs a question: if something probably not intended by the composer but which has been regularly performed sounds more effective than the ‘correct’ reading, should a new critical edition always return to what the composer is presumed to have intended?

For the sake of clarity, the screenshot shows the beginning of the Twitter thread in question.

It would be interesting to know who made this change for the first time. The composer himself, or a conductor in contact with Janacek?

Can you give us more context? I don't get it.
Janaček is famous for his own extravaganza.

Might the X be related to the action or staging rather than to the music? I don't have a copy of the score and the new critical edition is around €300…

Or, the X with bracket could refer to a footnote somewhere in the score, or to a comment in a preface?

If you can screenshot the whole page would be more helpful. What is EM?
