Placement of dynamics in Piano

Post by OCTO »

Hello.
I am a bit confused. Where to place dynamics and hairpins in this example?

Should everything be lined up?

Yes, in my opinion, although that first :forte could be placed a bit lower - between the two staves.

1. Because of what happens in 45-46, I would expand the distance between the staves to give more room for the dynamics.

2. I would get rid of the triplet markings except the first two. And if the pattern has occurred immediate previously, you might omit the first two. This will give more room for the dynamics, and take some unneeded symbols off the page.

Then:
measure 42: F 1/2-way between the staves
measures 43-44: mF<FF lined up as you have it in ex.2 but lower as close to the middle as possible without getting too close to the beams.
measures 45-46: good but as in 43-44

This is also very good example to express how I feel about dynamic placement. To my eye, the F, mF, FF, mF need to move to the right a little so they are centered over the note head. They each anticipate the note too much. I know that this is a matter of taste, but that is how I feel .

Thank you both RMK and John: I will do as you have proposed, everything you have said seems to be very logical.
