Artificial harmonic notehead origin

Post by NeeraWM »

Does anyone know when the artificial harmonic notehead (diamond) came into use?
One of the first to document artificial harmonics on cello thoroughly was J. J. F. Dotzauer, but this is his notation:

He mentions that the filled note is the pressed one and the hollow note is the touched one, so the practice is correct, but the notehead is round.

No edition from the XX century I have access to still uses the round notehead, so the change must have occurred around 1850 or so.
Any idea?
