As a BTW addendum, in Scottish, English and Irish poetry &c, ‘adieu’ has usually been pronounced rather differently from the French word, although generations younger than mine (I'm 83) seem inclined to pronounce it as if French, even when they are speaking English. I wonder how it is pronounced in the USA?

In the USA it is often pronounced like "ado". But sometimes with the French pronunciation (or an approximation thereof.)

Perhaps this thread should have the subtitle: "Much ado about adieu".

The poem is “A Farewell” by Samuel Rogers (1763-1855)
I believe he was British
