Re: Art song question regarding author name
I’d say you can and should leave out the lyricist’s name since it’s the same for all pieces and it’s already written on the front page, just like you leave out the composer’s name from - say - each of the sonatas in a volume of Mozart Sonatas. The traditional lyricist-on-the-left-composer-on-the rig...

Re: First system indents
ouf, depending on the score, that indent could be MASSIVE if there are a lot of instruments! if one had to make it a perfect square basically no orchestral score would have a first page! LOL Of course. Still, there may be some hidden proportions, after all we are able to see when an indent is too w...

Re: First system indents
A rule of thumb in typography is the first line of the paragraph should have an indent so the white space is a perfect square. Maybe is there something like that for music as well? (Maybe not, after all in typography the first line should not be indented, while for music the first system is the only...

Re: Line/Slur/etc. settings for Dorico
Again thank you so much. Most of your settings are the same than mine, or maybe it is just the default. But I am puzzled by: Gap after flags: -3/4 spaces. I wonder if this could make the tie crash against the flag. I have copied all of your settings when different from mine, and I am going to try th...

Re: Line/Slur/etc. settings for Dorico
Thanks a lot, John. I have borrowed your settings and I've noticed a marked improvement in my score.John Ruggero wrote: ↑25 Sep 2024, 18:59 Great suggestion! Here are my current Dorico slur settings. But they are still a work-in-progress:
Would you mind posting your settings for ties as well?

Re: Inquiry on the origin of ties
Seems as the engraver believes a repeated note can’t be done in a slurred phrase, i.e. a repeated note breaks any slur. So if the two notes are under a slur, they “obviously” can’t be played both, thus the tie is non-necessary. This *may* be true for flutes, where of course you can’t play two adjace...

Re: OpEd: Thoughts on the end of Finale.
Thanks Fred, now I see what’s the problem with not being able to edit one’s old files. I don’t know anything about musicals movies etc. as I only work with music approximately 1600-1799, which doesn’t need much revision once finished and printed.

Re: OpEd: Thoughts on the end of Finale.
I am reading a lot of complaints for the Finale shutdown, and on the Facebook often they take the form if a grieving loss: one has written: “I’ve been dumped after 27 years, now my work of 27 years is lost forever.” it seems excessive to me, but then it occurred to me that in fact I don’t know the s...

Re: Finale ceases development
For the last question: I don't think that fonts are the main reason of a nice looking score. It's not the music font, it's the artistry of the engraver's choices that make a written page beautiful. Sure enough, but we aren’t talking about what’s needed to get a beautiful page. That is true for text...
