Re: Two-note stem-side slurs and Elaine Gould
I've found it useful to have two versions of staccati (at least). One where the slur interaction is set to 'always inside' - for portati and one-bow staccati as in A below. One set to 'auto inside/outside' - for situations as in B. The 'auto' setting does not work with portati as in A, though, as sh...

Re: Two-note stem-side slurs and Elaine Gould
While the settings I tried in my last post may work for pairs of notes, they don't for groups of three or more notes:
Sorry. Clearly Finale could have had more granular settings for slurs.- 24 Apr 2020, 06:10

Re: Two-note stem-side slurs and Elaine Gould
I too am rather sceptical to Gould's recommendations, so I did some experimenting with the settings for the slurs placement: Slurs positioning 1.PNG In this example the settings for the vertical start and end points are: Smart Shape placement above.PNG Smart Shape placement under.PNG - and of course...

Re: Very Short Octave Sign Rant
I'm familiar with the word auxiliar, and with the expression 'auxiliar notes', but not with 'auxiliar lines'. Would you please explain that to me, non-native English user.

Re: Very Short Octave Sign Rant
Thanks, John. I have to ask though: auxiliary lines means the same as ledger lines?John Ruggero wrote: ↑20 Apr 2020, 13:26 I prefer more italic elements on the page and lighter auxiliary lines as a matter of contrast.

Re: Very Short Octave Sign Rant
Prompted by this thread among other things, I've just started reconsidering my use of octava signs. So far I've dispensed with Finale's 8va and 8vb using 8 only, together with the vertical positioning of the extension line as found in some editions, as well as with Gould. Reaching this point, I have...

Re: Effect of Notation process on engraving rules
To close in on the original topic: One thing that has improved with digital notation is writing cues in orchestral parts. In hand writing it was more important to turn the cue stems the opposite way, because the difference in size between regular and cue notes wasn't clear enough. Now you may treat ...

Re: Effect of Notation process on engraving rules
Some of the engraving I've seen makes me seriously wonder if the user has ever played music before. And perhaps they haven't. The thing is, that also the more knowledgable users are dependent on that less knowledgeable such are purchasing whatever program it may be. Otherwise it wouldn't have the f...

Re: Effect of Notation process on engraving rules
This might just be a part of a bigger picture: the democratization of values. Buy a music program and be your own "composer" and "engraver". "My taste is as good as yours". And perhaps it is, really. It's very difficult to argue against such notions. Who would argue aga...
