Hi all
What is this called? (see attached image)
I would call it a "rhythmic equivalent" or "durational equivalent", but i can't find it under these names in notation software manuals.
thanks!

Re: vertical rest placement polyphonic music
Thank you so much, John!
The second looks best to me too.
I'd bet youre right about simplifying the programming. Many (most?) recently published scores i have seen do the same default as Lilypond, and I'm assuming the majority of them used Finale.
peace!

vertical rest placement polyphonic music
Hi all What is the consensus on vertical rest placement in polyphonic music? The following shows Lilypond's default rest placement. Default: Screen Shot 2025-05-31 at 1.04.43 PM.png Should these rest positions be tweaked to center on the middle line of the staff? Screen Shot 2025-05-31 at 1.08.44 PM...

chromatic unison in chords?
Hi all This just came up on the Lilypond forum. https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-user/2024-12/msg00032.html What are your preferred ways to notate a chromatic unison in a chord? It seems like Elaine Gould says to use angled stems. Gardner Read gives 3 solutions: (see image) Gardner Read c...

Thanks, benwiggy.
I wonder if its worth trying to contact publishers?
One would think they'd be posted somewhere

publishers' "house style" manuals
Hi again,
Are publishers' "house style" manuals available anywhere?
I'm most interested in Henle and Barenreiter, but i don't recall ever seeing them from any publisher.
peace!

accidental stacking in chords
Hi all I'm sorry if this has already been answered. I couldnt find the answer using the search function, however. What are the rules regarding accidental placement in a very dense chord? How are they stacked? I was under this impression: start with the highest note, place accidental the next note be...
